The End of Talk Podcasts:
The future for audio fiction is rosy
Talk podcasts will always be here (see: talk radio), but their death grip on the norms of podcast listening will soon be over. One day soon, when people speak of “listening to podcasts” they will be speaking about fiction podcasts.

Here's shows that we think will start your year off right!

"Say Their Name" focuses on the assault and killing of unarmed Black people by police and in ‘Stand Your Ground’ states, highlighting incidents throughout the United States.
Serving as a memorialization for these individuals, we learn about who these people were through the words of the people that knew them best, while also helping us understand what these situations do to their families and communities not only in the immediate aftermath, but also what happens when the news-cycle moves on and the social media attention shifts focus.

Let’s face it. We all need some laughter in our lives. And I can’t imagine how I would have survived without my morning dose of insanity, laughter and the crazy life that Madame Magenta lives. What starts as a quirky diary of a mystic with questionable abilities (and morals) quickly evolves into a 007 action movie, just with Madame Magenta stumbling through it. I give this podcast 10 scented candle stars.
Honourable Mentions: Dirt, Unwell, Forgive Me! and Cam Candor

I've so been missing live theatre these past couple of years, both watching it and working on it. The first season of Starfall has been a lovely reminder of the warmth and community you can find backstage. A warrior with a mysterious past discovers the magic of the theatre – literally – as she joins a traveling troupe who use illusions to help set the scene.
Honourable Mentions: Mockery Manor, The Tower, The Land Whale Murders

This actual play podcast has been running the same continuous arc with weekly episodes since 2012. It's followed me around the world and been an inspiration for the way I run my own shows. This year marked the end of the story for their original characters as well as hundreds of other that we've met along the way. It was heartfelt and thoughtful while being exciting and engaging right up to the end. Don't worry, they'll be back with more
in the new year, and I can't wait to start a new adventure with them again!
Honourable Mentions: ROGUE RUNNERS, Oh Mice and Monsters and Men, Spout Lore, and Dumb-Dumbs & Dragons

BOB: Please disengage the humour.
SUIT: Fine. Be that way.
A sad bleep.
SUIT: Humour disengaged.
Beyond that, I can’t remember what my favourite Civilized moments are. All I know is that they get a laugh out of me once or twice an episode that comes as much from astonishment as from craft. There are jokes that succeed even though they shouldn’t, obscure or just strange jokes, and moments that are delightfully, exuberantly ridiculous. Civilized is hysterically amusing, and it’s what drew me to this network in the first place!
Honourable Mentions: Wolf359, Kane and Feels, Caravan, and Janus Descending

I didn't know I needed this podcast until I listened. Not only does it feature one of my old university buddies and favourite comedians, Abdul Aziz, the cast is outstanding, the world building is fantastic, and the whole plot is delightful and hilarious. If you like actual plays, fantasy and comedy, look no further than Spout Lore!
Honourable Mentions: Forgive Me, Death by Dying, Madame Magenta, We Fix Space Junk and Midnight Symphony

Midnight burger is an audio drama about a time-traveling, dimension-spanning diner.
At one point, far in the past (not that time exists) someone did what someone always does: built something in the face of chaos.
When the waves of the universe crash unrelentingly, when the stars seem indifferent to your plight, suddenly there is a diner.
They open at 6.
